TIRPITZ 75TH IN TROMSO
Fourteen members of the IX(B) Sqn Association visited Tromso from 11-13 November 2019 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the Tirpitz, alongside members of the junior Sqn Association. Also present were the German Defence Attaché to Norway, local dignitaries, Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNAF) personnel, local historians and members of both serving Sqns as well as other people from the wider RAF who were part of a “staff ride” learning about the events of 75 years ago. A boat took us from Tromso Harbour to the final resting site of the Tirpitz, near Håkøya island where we considered the losses to both sides in the War, and reflected on personal sacrifice through an act of remembrance. The Service of Remembrance started at exactly 0941 hrs, which was the time the first Tallboy 12,000 lb bomb was released by the RAF Lancasters 75 years ago, with a flypast of 6 RNAF aircraft in superb formation. At 0952, wreaths were laid onto the freezing cold water by both Sqns, both Sqn Associations and others.
We then returned to a Tromso hotel for lunch and a superb Tirpitz presentation was given by Mr Kjetil Aakra, who is an old friend of the IX(B) Sqn Association. We were then taken by coach to the CWGC cemetery in Tromso, where another short Service of Remembrance was held and wreaths were laid by both Sqns and both Sqn Associations. From there, following a warm up back in the Tromso hotel, we were taken to the Tromso Tirpitz Defence Museum, which was located in an old German gun battery bunker on a hillside overlooking the town. The 84 year old Curator gave us an interesting presentation of his personal memories from 75 years ago.
The final event was a splendid formal dinner in the Tromso hotel, where IX(B) Sqn and its Association made a number of presentations:
• Sqn Ldr Stuart Grady from IX(B) Sqn, RAF Lossiemouth presented renowned Tirpitz expert Commander Leif Arneberg with a IX(B) Sqn painting.
• IX(B) Sqn Association Project Officer Stu Bowers presented a bottle of OP Catechism Gin to Commander Per Weiler, the Defence Attaché to Norway and Iceland.
• Dicky James presented IX(B) Sqn prints by John Fox to local historians Kjetil Aakra and John Asmussen, who gave the lunchtime Tirpitz lecture.
• Dicky James presented a bottle of OP Catechism Gin to the Mayor of Tromso.
The IX(B) Sqn Association was represented by:
Caryl & Ian Carr – Caryl’s father Frank Sowerby DFC flew on the Tirpitz raids.
John Harris & Denise Heriot – John’s father Ray Harris DFC flew on the Tirpitz raids.
Allyson MacIntosh – whose father Donald MacIntosh DFC flew on the Tirpitz raids.
Jonathan Prettejohns – whose father Gerald Prettejohns flew on the Tirpitz raids.
Stu Bowers & Sophia Morris.
Ade & Cath Hargreaves.
Tony & Ann Hetherington.

Personnel from IX (B) Squadron and 617 Squadron took part in the Tirpitz 75th commemorative event on the 12th November 2019. The even aimed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the Tirpitz and consider lessons identified from the successful air raid.
The event began with a journey by ship from the Tromso harbour to where the Tirpitz was berthed on 12th Novemeber 1944. As a result of Operation CATECHISM the Tirpitz capsized at 0952 local time. A ceremony was held on board to commemorate the loss of the ship and the 971 of the crew who were killed.
A presentation was then held by a local historian about the Tirpitz before heading to the Tromso cemetery, where there are 37 Commonwealth War Graves, to pay their respects. A visit to the Tromso Tirpitz Museum followed. A formal Dining in Night was also held on the evening with Royal Air Force personnel, 617 Squadron Association guests and IX Squadron Association guests in attendance.
